The Vows We Make Book 4 of The Six Series Mark and Paige's story.
Some vows can be deadly..... winters-kiss Mark and Paige are living in sin—that's what any man of the cloth would say. All they want is to get married, but they refuse to exchange vows without their best friends—the Six. As they wait to hear back from them, Mark and Paige can't help but feel they've been put off… forgotten. When the threat of an enemy stalking them is brought to light, the call is made to bring them into the secretive world of Cole Enterprise. Slotted for recruitment by the very agency that stole their chance at a normal life, Mark and Paige have to adjust to their new path as secret agents in a war they didn’t even know existed. What neither fully understands is that nothing will ever be the same… and some vows are deadlier than others. winters-kiss-eb excerpt-image CHANGE WAS ALL AROUND ME. Everything was different. My life. My dreams. All of it. Maybe some of it was for the best. Maybe it would push Mark and me to make more of ourselves than we would have on our own. Crossing my arms tightly, I stepped out onto the dock and made my way to where Mark stood looking out over the water. Coming back to the cabin and being around our friends after such a long absence from both had enveloped us in something like a constrictive hug. Both needing it, while desperately trying to come to terms with it. “Hey,” I said, stepping up beside him and sighing when he pulled me into his arms. I leaned back, turning my head slightly to fit into the crook of his neck. His cheek brushed against my hair and he asked, “Can you believe this place?” I snorted. “No. But then again, we are talking about Jared’s parents, so…” “True. It still feels the same here though,” he answered, watching the water ripple along the surface with the wind. Arriving at the cabin, or what used to be the cabin, had sort of floored us all. No one knew what to say when we’d got our first glimpse of the new and improved place. What used to be one story with a kitchen, living room, and six bedrooms with bathrooms was gone. Its replacement was two stories, ten bedrooms with full bathrooms, a massive open-floor kitchen/living room, a movie theater room, and a game room. Grant and Nadia had gone all out to make the cabin a place where all of us could live together, for an unforeseeable amount of time. “It’s like they just knew…” I said, leaving the rest of what I was thinking unsaid. It wouldn’t do any good to dwell on the things none of us could change. “How are you holding up with all of this?” Mark asked. I sighed deeply and closed my eyes. “Honestly? I don’t know how to feel right now. It’s like this huge war being waged right here,” I said, poking my finger against my chest. “I’m happy to see everyone. We’re here together—just like we wanted—but for all the wrong reasons. I’m missing classes and work. I don’t know what to do with myself. My life is literally on hold at this point.” He hugged me tighter. “Tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it. If you want to leave, we’ll go. They can’t hold us here.” I snorted. “Can you imagine the look on all of their faces if we just walked out with our suitcases behind us? No. I love you for that though. It’s nice to hear you’d do that to make me happy.” He kissed the top of my head. “I’d do anything to make you happy, Paige.” Wedding rings, engraved

My Review:

Fraud (Frenzy, #5)Fraud by Casey L. Bond
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Author Casey Bond turned me inside out with this book. Just when I thought I knew where the characters were heading, she threw in a twist that disentigrated my world. I consumed this book in hours as my desire for more enticed me to fly through the pages. Each new revealtion pushing me forward for just one more chapter.

My love for these characters flourished as their true colors came shining through during their most difficult decisions. The love and courage they showed is a testiment to the great character building the author has done. It felt like these characters were a part of me and I experienced every painful situation they were forced to endure. My heart shattered only to be mended lovingly back together by the brave and selfless characters. Wow, just wow!

"I'd finally found a reason to live, and even if it was only for the length of her lifetime, I would spend it with her."

I have loved this series from the beginning and book 5 was bittersweet for me. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Porshia, Tage, Saul, Mercedes and even Roman (LOL), but I also know that there must always be an ending. The author did an excellent job and I look forward to seeing what journey she will take me on next.

Excerpt from Fools Rush by Ciara Knight:
“Listen. I’m sorry. You obviously had a rough time growing up, and I don’t blame you for feeling the way you do about drinking.” Thomas rubbed the back of his neck. “I know you probably don’t believe me, but I never really drank before. I never wanted to be the man that beat my sister.”
Bethany rolled her eyes at his words.
“Trust me. I’m a man who likes to be in control at all times. It was just that— ”
“There is always an excuse,” she said under her breath.
“I know. That girl, though … she did something to me. Have you ever not wanted to think about someone but that same person haunts your dreams?” Thomas blew out a long breath. “Of course not.”
“Yes.” The man sitting by her side tied her stomach in knots and she wanted to hate him more than anything, but the way he gingerly tended her wounds stirred an ache for him to touch her more. She didn’t want him, she didn’t want any man controlling her. “I know you believe that woman are dumb for sticking around when their husbands beat them. You think your sister had a choice to leave, but you’re wrong. Men do things to control their wives.”
Thomas retrieved the reins and wrapped them around the brake. “Perhaps. I can’t do anything about that, though. Neither can you. All we can do is be better men.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “You know the girl … Bethany, right?”
She couldn’t deny it now. Not after being accused of stealing and saying Bethany gave the stuff to her. How did things get so confusing? “Yes.”
“Do you know if she’s married?” His voice trailed off, as did his gaze.
He sat up straight, a smile crossing his lips that screamed danger. “She’s not?”
A lifetime was revealed in that smile—a lifetime of serving and being abused by a man who would tire of her and turn to the bottle. He’d already shown the bottle was his friend.
“I … I don’t know.” Tell him she’s married. Tell him he can never have her. The words wouldn’t flow.
He beat his palm against his head. “Stupid. This is stupid, Thomas.”
“Do you always talk to yourself?”
“Too often lately.” Thomas sat back and moved his hat over his eyes and crossed his arms. “If you don’t know, then I’m going to find out.”
“Why? We’ve got a good thing going. What if she’s married to a man like Sarah’s husband? A drunk who beats her all the time. You going to get involved in that?” Bethany needed to stop him from searching for her. Especially if it meant examining her closer. Since they’d left he’d barely looked at her, and when he did he commented on her strange ways. No. This couldn’t happen.
He stiffened and sat up, dropping his hat at his feet. “I don’t know what I’d do.”
“I know what you’d do. You’d give her hope then turn the other way because you don’t want to get involved, leaving her to face a worse beating than before you stepped into her life. Let it be.” Bethany grabbed the reins, ignoring the sting in her hands, and slapped the rear of the closest horse, brooking no more conversation. Not when her heart quickened and her thoughts betrayed her. Not when two little words that would end her life rolled to the tip of her tongue. I’m Bethany.

“I’m not going to pretend that I’m not interested in getting to know you better. I think, if you stay, you’ll learn that I might have more to offer than that boyfriend of yours.” As difficult as it was, I’d been trying very hard not to read her thoughts. For some reason, invading that part of her, when I felt it was perfectly acceptable for me to do it with anyone else, seemed wrong.
“Is that so?” Her eyelashes fluttered open as she looked up at me, revealing her beautiful blue eyes full of…desire?
“You certainly are sure of yourself.”
“I have nothing to lose, Maggie.”
“Now it’s Maggie?”
“I’m sorry?”
“Well, I was just getting used to the way my real name sounds when you say it.”
“Ah. Well, then, I will try to make a conscious effort to call you Magdalena.”
“You are a temptation.”
“Whatever it takes, Mags.”
“Now you’re just being mean.” She laughed. “Your charm, or your lack of charm, whichever one you use, isn’t going to make me stay.”
“Do you want to leave?”
“Not really. But I need to.”
I pressed my lips briefly against hers, just to see what would happen. As I guessed, she didn’t resist. “You do have a choice, Magdalena. Come.” I took her hand in mine. “One more dance, then you can leave. And even though you’ll be breaking my heart, I’ll even pay for your cab home.”
She followed me to the dance floor, and I took her in my arms. As I held her close, inhaling her intoxicating smell, she whispered in my ear. “Cian, I wish I could stay. I really do.”
“Shhh. No talk of leaving. Let’s just enjoy the moment we have together.”
When the song ended, I took Magdalena’s hand and walked her through the hallway that led to the outside. It was dark and I couldn’t resist one last shot at exploring her luscious body. I stopped and turned her to face me. I stepped closer, pinning her gently against the wall, and covered her lips with mine. This kiss was much different than the brief skimming I’d allowed myself earlier.
This kiss held all the allure I wanted her to feel, along with the promise of what could be if she only allowed herself the pleasure.
The cleavage protruding from the top of her dress left me weak in the knees, and my lips found their way to that spot as if they’d been possessed. I kissed the tops of her breasts, and she kissed my neck right below my ear. My fingers ached to touch the skin beneath her silver dress, and I moved to do just that. I found her thigh soft and silky. Almost as silky as the material she wore. My fingers inched up her thigh, massaging gently. I waited for her to stop me. I could have compelled her to let me do whatever I wanted to, but this woman was different. I wanted her to want it. To want me. When she didn’t stop me, I skimmed my forefinger along the edge of her panties and slipped it between her thighs, finding her oh so gloriously wet. My gods, she was stunningly beautiful.
My cock stiffened, a prisoner locked behind a zipper of steel.
“Cian,” she breathed against my neck, and I silenced her with my mouth, exploring every inch of hers, tasting, taking what she seemed so willing to give me as my finger teased the soft skin of her thigh just outside of her very wet undergarment. “I need to go.” The dreaded words flowed from her swollen lips like poison to my soul, and I had to fight the too-easy urge to compel her to stay.
